The industry finally named my job: Forward Deployed Engineer. Palantir coined it. OpenAI and Anthropic just built billion dollar business units around it. It is military language for the unit that does not sit at headquarters. It ships out and operates inside the environment where the problem lives. I have been that unit for two decades.
At Google I ran Google Cloud reliability from the inside: incident response, disaster recovery, capacity planning for customers whose systems could not go down. At BMW of North America I embedded with the ConnectedDrive unit, ran Azure cloud architecture, and doubled consumer NPS through SRE practice. At Fashion Nova I sat inside the marketing org and built AI that read hundreds of thousands of customer images, mapped regional fashion trends, cut ad spend, and drove millions in revenue. Before that I built a global NOC for Hyatt from the ground up, 40,000 assets on a single pane of glass, and kept United Airlines flight operations standing at 3am.
